October 10-12, 2003

Dear Scoutmasters and Senior Patrol Leaders of District 3,

Fall Camporee is right around the corner and promises to be one like no other before it.

This year we will be traveling north to Historic Fort Hancock, located in Gateway National Park (Sandy Hook).  Troop 34 of Fort Dix will be the host troop for this event.

The theme will be Orienteering and Pioneering.  There will be a challenging Scavenger Hunt / Orienteering Course that will include the historic sites and displays located on Fort Hancock, to include the Sandy Hook Light House.

Did you know that Fort Hancock was a proving ground for steam powered cannon?  Or that Sandy Hook Light House is the oldest operating lighthouse in the United States?  Come and take the tours that will be provided and learn how these landmarks came about. Hint -  they are part of the Orienteering Course.

There will be a judged gateway competition.  Brush up on your knot tying skills. All projects must be lashed and completed by the scouts.

Also, we will be featuring a different kind of Cooking Competition - Rome Irons and Utensiless Cooking.

Don't think your going to be bored!  There will be other demonstrations going on in and about the Orienteering Course.  The Orienteering Course will not be timed enabling you to stop and take in the sites and demonstrations.

There will be a Senior Patrol Leader meeting September 9, 2003 at 7:30 PM.  All troops participating in the camporee should send their SPL or youth representative to this important information session.

More information will follow.  Check the council web site www.bccbsa.org.

Yours in scouting,
Martha Osburn-Henry
