WASHINGTON ‘05... A Class “A” Trip The weekend was the best trip I’ve been on in a long time. The weather was superb and the company was great. The drive took a bit longer than expected because of traffic, so we setup camp in the dark, anyone remember doing that? The boys found wood for the campfire, and started it with only matches. By about eleven thirty we all climbed into our tents for the night. Everything looked fine the next morning and we were in the right campsite so we did OK. Saturday started with French toast, bacon and a drive to the Metro. We arrived at the mall about 10:00am, got our timed tickets to tour the Capitol Building at 12:50.We spent the next 3hours touring the air & space museum and getting lunch in the museum cafeteria. We then ran back to the Capitol Building for our 12:50 tour and waited until the actual tour started at 1:20. (This must be where scout time originated.) After an entertaining tour of the Capital we moved on to the American History Museum. While the group was visiting the halls of history two of our brave adult set out to hunt down dinner. After American History everyone regrouped and the boys took advantage of the fair skies and warm temperatures are on the mall. They found half a Frisbee to study and share amongst them and let the adults sample the park benches, Next we visited the Korean and Vietnam Memorials. We then had a short 12 block walk to dinner at Bertuchi’s, the place the brave leaders previously secured reservations, we found a table set for 25 along the wall in the back. After 9 pizzas and many soda refills we walked two blocks to the Metro and made it back to camp by 10:00. Ice cream and a campfire finished off the day. Sunday started with bacon and eggs. We broke camp and went to Arlington Cemetery. First we visited the Iwo Jima Memorial then had our Scouts Own service at the base of the Netherlands Carillon. Then it was onto Arlington Memorial Cemetery we first visited the Women’s War Memorial. On exhibit is ‘Faces of the Fallen: America’s Artist Honor American Heroes’. We walked to the grave of JFK we saw the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then onto the Maine and the memorial the Challenger and Columbia crews. We visited the grave of George's stepbrother and climbed back in the cars for the ride home. The boys were a pleasure to take on this trip. Friday night, at camp, they decided to wear their Class “A “uniform both Saturday and Sunday. Boy did they look great and we all noticed they weren’t the only troop in uniform. There were so many scout troops visiting the mall in class “A” uniform I sometimes had trouble finding them (I think they new that would happen). Being in uniform did cause some delays because people seemed to think we knew where to find every attraction in the city and are bi-lingual. It was easy to be helpful. I want to thank all the adults that gave up a weekend so the boys could go and hope they also feel it was well worth the time spent. I also want to thank all the parents for giving us all the opportunity to take these guys for the weekend and I encourage you to join us on the next trip. Thanks again, Ed, Mr. M. or even Uncle Eddie. |
