2007 NJ State Police Camporee Update

If your Troop or Crew is not sure whether they want to attend the 2007 NJ State Police Camporee, allow me to clear up a few gray areas for you.  This is going to be an even bigger show than it was in 2004.  Your Scouts really need to be there.  The State Police Organization will be pulling out all the stops and bringing every ounce of available resources to Sea Girt for an eye-popping 3 day event. 10,000 Scouts will be converging on the NJSP Recruit Training Center on Oct 5, 6, and 7th for one of the most memorable weekends that a Scout can feast on.

In a few short weeks, posters will be made available to every Troop and Crew so that you can actively promote the event at your spring “Open House” for new Scouts. At the Camporee the State Police Superintendent will be awarding a special commemorative “Super Recruiter” patch to each Scout that recruits a friend to join Scouting between now and the camporee date Oct 5, 6, and 7th, 2007.  This can be either a Webelos Scout that they encourage to “cross over” to Boy Scouts, or it can be a brand new boy who has never been a Cub Scout or Boy Scout before.  Venturers, Sea Scouts, and Law Enforcement Explorers can also take advantage of this opportunity by asking a new boy or girl to join their Crew, Ship, or Post.  The patch is great –

but the even bigger deal is that the newly recruited Scouts get to attend the Camporee with their friends.  They will not want to miss this opportunity. It only comes around once every 3 years!

In the months of March and April we want to get the word out about this special “Super Recruiter” program, and share general information about the Camporee with as many Troops and Venture Crews as we possibly can.  If we can get our District volunteers up to speed quickly on many key details, we stand a good chance of having Commissioners and District Volunteers come to visit individual Troop and Crew meetings to do a short presentation and engage in a question and answer dialogue.

If you would prefer to do your own research on your our time schedule, you can get more information and register for the Camporee, and get specifics about the “Super Recruiter Program” by logging on to the Jersey Shore Council website at www.jerseyshore-bsa.org

Please get back to me if you would like to arrange a visit in March or April for a short presentation about the Camporee.  This presentation date would also be an excellent time to bring up the subject of all the High Adventure activities that the Council has planned for the summer of 2008.

I hope this helps to give you a few ideas about how to increase your membership by actively promoting upcoming big events.  The only way to affect a young person’s life and to instill the positive attributes that Scouting has to offer is to get them happily involved.  The first step is getting them to fill out an application to join Scouting. When they wake up on Saturday morning, October 6th, and see what awaits them at the NJ State Police Camporee, they’re going to be glad they joined. You’ll be able to recognize them very easily - they will all be grinning from ear to ear.

*Some camperships are available to help defray the costs of this event. Please contact Rick Shropshire with requests.
