1998 Feb email Letter from Ari Lowenstein former Yawgoog staff member

Hello Troop 26,

I'm not sure how many of you will remember me, my name is Ari Lowenstein and I am a former Yawgoog staff member. I've just "surfed" through your website and I am really happy to see that your troop, and scouting, seems to be going so strongly. As we all know, the internet is the future and it is fitting and necessary for scouting to take full advantage of it. As for my own scouting career, unfortunately, after camping as a scout for five years and working on the staff for nine years, my Yawgoog career ended in 1995. I must say that I really miss spending my summers there and working with scouts and scouters.

I remember Troop 26 very well, from my days as a Program Commissioner, ACD and Camp Director. In fact, I have a maglight that was a gift from Mr. Thomas in 1993 (when he picked up the clipboard). The maglight has travelled with me throughout Israel, England, and has now found itself with me here, in Rome. Yes, I live in Rome, home of fine food and dining (even better than the Metcalf Lodge) My sister and I have a consulting company (Lowenstein Consulting) and we do management and strategic consulting for international corporations, museums, and for the Italian public administration. The work is very challenging and often I feel that I am putting in the 18 hour workdays that I gave so willingly down at Yawgoog. Our business is going very well, and I can tell you honestly that many of the skills that I put to use in managing our company and working with my colleagues, I learned in scouting and at Yawgoog. When I first came to Rome (for an intended 3-week visit), my sister asked me, with a grin, "My business is expanding and I need someone with experience in personell management, do you know anyone?" Anyway, that was two years ago and the rest is history.

Rome is a beautiful city. The history is visible everywhere. From the Roman-era Forum, Colosseum, and Circus Maximus, to Renaissance fountains and St. Peter's Cathedral, everywhere you go you are reminded of who walked on these streets before you, who gazed up at these hills and who breathed this air. It is inspiring. One day I will return to the States, but not just now.

The most rewarding part of my Yawgoog and scouting experience was meeting the scouts and scouters and then continuing those relationships year after year. That experience is truly one that can only happen in the world of scouting, and was particularly rewarding for me at Yawgoog. I remember my first year with Troop 26 and the enthusiasm of the scouts and adult leaders. In fact, I seem to remember trips to the local library to find answers for the daily trivia contest........ something about four aircraft carriers........ Anyway, I remember thinking to myself that this troop really understood what Yawgoog had to offer them and that they really embodied the Yawgoog spirit. Well that's all for now. If any of you would like to drop me a line, my e-mail is: lowenstein_consulting@compuserve.com.

And don't forget: TNCRTB (There's None Can Reach The Beach)

Yours in Scouting, Ari Lowenstein Camp Director - Camp Sandy Beach - 1995
